  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mommy of Twins -- Messe it Forthe! : The cookbook itself begins at Locations 374-77. For those new to older writings, read it out loud to yourself, or to a helper - it may assist you in 'translation.' Also, the 'p' looking-thing where the line goes up like a lower-case 'h' is pronounced "th". So "...it techip a man for to make commune potages and commune meetis for howshold as pey shold be made craftly..." means more or less "it teaches a man to make common potages (look that one up ;) ) and common meats for household as they should be made craftily" i.e., look nice. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alan Duxbury -- English cooking - best in the world... : If you are a serious cook, or even if you just like the challenge of dipping into 700 year old recipes, this is a fascinating book. We tend to assume that recipes were just passed down orally before the advent of the 1800's Cookery books, but here we are with a serious attempt at writing recipes dating from 1390! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- more than just a step back in time : Fascinating look into the past. more than just a step back in time. you can read all about "history" in a high school or college history book: So and so went to [name of place] and did [action] on such and such a date. THIS IS DIFFERENT! as striking and mind boggling as the scene in "Shogun" where the Englishman is upset because the pheasant he was hanging by its dead neck hadn't finished ripening to the point where it fell off and was disposed of before he could eat it, are some of these recipes. What they SAY about life in those times is something you can never grasp from a school history book. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2012 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Strat Caster -- This is not the complete book! : This is just the recipies. The copy I recieved was missing the introductions (both the original and the one written by Pegge) as well as a majority of the footnotes Pegge included in his text. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Liva -- Reading a Cookbook : I forst came accross this book while searching for good classics to read for broadening my knowledge of literaure of he time. I was not prepared to find this book as entertaining as I found it. Reading passages out loud to people around me became a normal practice for me and I enjoyed it every step of the way. The language was a hard thing to understand at first, but it got better and better from day to day. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2014 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Brenda Belgrove -- The Forme of a Cury Roll : An interesting set of recipes, once one got past the lengthy introduction. It was a challenge to work out the various measures and old English words and definitions. I think I might just try a couple of the recipes with modern-day ingredients - could be fun! ( Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- A Wonderful experience : This is a wonderful experience reading old English. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- mental mayhem : Really cool. Love figuring out what it says. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from LDB -- Fascinating! : You really do have to persevere reading this, what with the original Chaucer's era language and 18th centuary glossary! However the glossaries are very comprehensive, and most of the recipes are simple, and at least viable, even if some may be not to modern tastes - or ideas about healthy balanced eating! As a historical document about where we came from, it is very, very interesting, and sometimes a bit of a surprise - apparently cardamoms were available to those who could afford them! Anybody even slightly interested in domestic history should read it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 22, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from nigel -- Brillant book for insight into two historic worlds. It's ... : Brillant book for insight into two historic worlds. It's a wonder any of our medievalancestors had any teeth left. All pudding and mess. Its a challenge to have a go at cooking some of these things. It has to be the Worlds first cookbook and I bet Mrs Beatons ancestors were mixed up in there somewhere. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from AZB500 -- EXCELLENT : Fascinating read ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Keith Farrell -- and the ebook isn't an easy read. : It's an interesting reproduction of a historical text, but the formatting seems to be poorly done, and the ebook isn't an easy read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 10, 2014 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Spiri -- Some interesting recipe hints : Interesting both from an historical perspective and as a source for ideas for modern cooking. Quantities need to be adjusted in light of experience (or experimentation) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 2, 2014 )
